Electric motors generate heat because of electrical and mechanical losses. Cooling is necessary to continuously transfer the heat to a cooling medium, such as the air. In AC induction motors, the cooling air is usually circulated internally and externally by one or more fans mounted on the rotor shaft. The cooling method classification used by the IEC is the index of cooling (IC), the classes are provided below.
